Treating wounds

March 22, 2011

It’s nice to be needed as a medic. It’s not so nice to see one of your guys in pain. But then again it’s nice to be around some blood when all you ever do is stare at empty fields…

So what happened is one of our guys laid his bike down (as in motorcycle) and they called me to come look and treat and give my opinion. We aren’t talking a typical road rash here. More like a certified hole in his knee…at least an inch across and a quarter inch deep – too gaping for stitches. So after 5 hours in the ER, it is my privilege to irrigate and bandage it every couple of days. Maybe it’s not a combat injury, but its a lot better and closer than a splinter or sprained ankle!!

And it’s healing much faster than I anticipated…today it didn’t ooze too much and there wasn’t gushing blood after taking the dirty dressing off. So, it’s nice to be put to work (finally)
